こうして機械式掘削機のメーカーはバックホー・ローダーの脅威に立ち向かえず、高炉大手はスクラップから鉄鋼を生産する電炉メーカーに不意打ちを食らった。どちらの製品もニッチ市場向けで、本物を買う余裕のない顧客のためのものだった。こうした技術が安さを保ちながら品質的に同等になる頃には、旧来メーカーが対応するには、もう手遅れだった。

こうした事例は、米国の学者クレイトン・クリステンセン氏が1997年に名著『イノベーションのジレンマ』で列挙している。
